New President eyes off era of renewal

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson has been elected president of the Local Government Association of Queensland for the next four years.
Cr Jamieson was voted in at the LGAQ annual conference on the Gold Coast yesterday, replacing acting president Cr Jenny Hill.
The second-term mayor told delegates he was well-equipped to lead Queensland’s 77 councils into a new era.
“I have invited the councils across Queensland to see me as a fresh approach, an agent of renewal and I am committed to being a good listener and working with them to find solutions,” Cr Jamieson said.
“The LGAQ is an organisation with a long and proud history of over a century of representation – and I look forward to contributing to its future.
“I have always been a person who looks beyond challenges for opportunities and the councils across Queensland have my commitment that I will lead the LGAQ in a direction that supports them to identify and secure the best possible opportunities for their communities.
“Importantly, what I offer the LGAQ is a fiercely independent President, with no political party allegiances and the fact that I have demonstrated the ability to work across the political divide and with whoever may be in power.
“This is crucial for local government given the volatility that has become a feature of the Federal and State political landscape.”
Cr Jamieson, a former media executive, said he would seek to improve productivity and financial sustainability in councils, help the sector gain access to innovative new markets and connect to the digital economy and foster stronger indigenous communities.
He will also continue the campaign to achieve a modern and fair industrial relations regime for local government.
Western Downs Regional Councillor Ray Brown also stood for the position of LGAQ president.
“This sense of public duty and commitment does not go unnoticed and I know that Ray has a long-standing, firm commitment to local government and will work tirelessly as a member of the Board and the Policy Executive,” Cr Jamieson said.
