University of Southern Queensland 2017 Community Service Alumnus of the Year
Statement by Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson
I am delighted and humbled to receive the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) 2017 Community Service Alumnus of the Year Award.
I thank the University and the Alumni Advisory Committee for the recognition that they have bestowed on me as a graduate of USQ
The USQ is my alma mater and I studied there as an external student in 1990-1996 whilst working for the Toowoomba Chronicle.
My time at USQ helped to open a wider horizon for me and helped cement my very firm belief that in senior leadership roles, we should always strive to not only do well but do good.
It is what our communities expect of us – we should expect nothing less of ourselves.
This has been the approach I have taken throughout my career both in the private sector and in public office – both as Mayor of the Sunshine Coast Council and President of the Local Government Association of Queensland.
I also take the opportunity to congratulate the other Alumnus Category winners for 2017. I am certainly in esteemed company.
This Award is one that I share with my wife Lorrell and three children. Their enduring support, including when I was studying at USQ via Distance Education whilst also pursuing my career, has never faltered.
