Sunshine Coast’s new international broadband network – calling for expressions of interest
Sunshine Coast Council has announced expressions of interest for a new international broadband network to be constructed by 2020 will be open from tomorrow (December 2).
Mayor Mark Jamieson said council was wasting no time prioritising future employment opportunities, improvements for local businesses and new investment generation.
“As part of our commitment to be Australia’s leading smart city region, we have completed the market sounding process and have now moved to the next stage,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“Council is looking for expressions of interest from suitably qualified providers who want to partner with council to deliver this critical project.
“Expressions of interest can be made for one or multiple onshore and offshore components of the project being the submarine cable, the cable landing station/data centre and backhaul from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane.”
Mayor Jamieson said the proposed cable project had the potential to transform the Sunshine Coast and broader Queensland economy.
“A new international broadband network will create up to 864 jobs per annum on the coast and provide a potential economic boost of $927 million to Queensland,” Mayor Jamieson said.
